The Boree Log Award for Bush Verse

Father Patrick Hartigan (1875-1952) was ordained in 1903, and served in various positions, including twenty-seven years as parish priest at Narrandera.  Writing under the pseudonym, John O'Brien, he published two volumes of poetry: Around the Boree Log in 1921, and, posthumously, 'The Church at St Mel's'.  He is fondly remembered for poems such as 'Said Hanrahan' and 'The Old Bush School'.  He is buried in North Rocks near Parramatta.

 

   

Conditions of Entry 

1.      Ballad to be written in perfect rhyme and metre, within a maximum of 80 lines, with an Australian bush theme.

2.      First Prize $200 plus trophy and certificate. Certificates awarded for Highly Commended and Commended places. Maximum of three entries per entrant.   

3.      Entries to be in English, the original unpublished work of the entrant and not to have won a cash prize in another competition at 31st May 2009.

4.      All entries to be typed on one side of A4 sized paper.

5.      NO NAME TO APPEAR ON MANUSCRIPT. Pages to be numbered with a short title of the entry on top or bottom of each page.

6.      The Judge's decision is final. Winner will be notified by phone and published in The Australian Bush Poets' Association Newsletter and Writers' Voice. Date for presentation of prizes to be confirmed after successful entrants are known.

7.      Entries will be destroyed after results are announced. Please enclose a Business size SSAE for results.

8.      No entry form required, however, a separate sheet stating name, address and phone number of poet together with title of ballad must be included.

9.      Entry Fee - $5 per entry.

10. Closing date - 31st May 2009.

Category 1      Short Story -  Max. 3000 words

 Category 2      Traditional Rhyming Poetry - Max. 40 lines, no bush verse

Category 3      Free Verse Poetry - Max. 40 lines

Category 4      Memoir - Max. 1500 words. First $150, Second $50.

                            (For the purpose of this competition memoir means: an

                              incident from one's own life and experiences.)

 

Category 5      Pauline Walsh Encouragement Award for Short Story

                                  - open only to writers who have never won a cash prize for short story. 800-                            1500 words. Two prizes of $50 each.

 

All categories open theme.

No entry form, but all entries must include a cover sheet stating name,

contact details and, for short story and memoir, word count.

  5. The decision of the judges is final. Winners will be notified by mail and announced in Writers Voice. Presentation of prizes will be at a presentation night several weeks after the closing date.
  6. Entries will be destroyed after results are announced. Please enclose a business-sized SSAE for Result Sheet.
  7. Entry to this competition signifies acceptance of the above. Entries not meeting these conditions will not be judged and the entry fee will not be refunded.
